A soft-leaved member of the mint family whose oil is one of the few that improves with age — a young patchouli is sharp and green, an aged one round and dark. It reached Europe in the nineteenth century in the folds of Kashmir shawls, where the dried leaves had been packed to keep moths out, and the scent became the proof that a shawl was genuine.
