Oats began as a weed. They grew up among wheat and barley in the Fertile Crescent and were pulled out for centuries before anyone noticed they did better than the crop in cold, wet ground and started sowing them on purpose. The protein fraction is the part used here, and it is the reason oat has been put in bathwater for as long as there has been bathwater.
