The power of plants

The plant

A desert shrub with leathery grey-green leaves, the only plant known to store its energy as a liquid wax ester rather than a triglyceride. That single fact is why jojoba behaves unlike any other 'oil': it is chemically closer to the wax the skin makes itself, it does not go rancid the way true oils do, and it can sit in a bottle for years. In the 1970s it replaced sperm whale oil in industry, which is the least romantic and most important thing about it.
