The coconut is a seed that travels by sea. Its husk floats, its shell is watertight, and it can drift for months and still germinate on a beach it has never seen — which is how a single species came to ring the tropics. The oil pressed from the dried kernel is almost entirely saturated, which makes it solid below about 24°C and remarkably slow to spoil.
