Sweet Briar Rose
Sweet Briar Rose
The plant
The wild rose whose leaves smell of green apple when crushed. It is a hedgerow plant, thorny and unruly, and the reason it matters here is what happens after the flower: the hip. Inside the hip are seeds, and the oil pressed from those seeds is unusually high in linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid — around eighty per cent polyunsaturated, which is what gives it its almost dry feel and its short shelf life.
Where it appears

Bulgarian Rose Hand Cream
What it does
The base of our facial oil at more than half the formula, used for its polyunsaturated profile and light, fast-absorbing texture.
Where it comes from
Certified organic. Because the oil is so highly unsaturated, it is stabilised in formula with vitamin E and rosehip CO₂ rather than left to oxidise.
Two different roses are called rosehip. This is Rosa eglanteria — the pressed seed oil. The CO₂ extract in the same bottle is Rosa canina. They are not interchangeable, and we list them separately.
