The power of plants

The plant

The juniper "berry" is not a berry. It is a cone whose scales have swollen and fused into something fleshy, and it takes two or three years to ripen from green to blue-black — so one bush usually carries two crops at once, one of each colour. This is the common juniper, the one that flavours gin, and it has the widest natural range of any woody plant on earth.
