The power of plants

The plant

The camphor tree has several chemotypes that look identical and smell nothing alike; the ho type is the one that is almost entirely linalool — sweet, soft, faintly woody. It matters as a modern ingredient because it stands in for rosewood, whose Amazonian source tree was harvested to the point of CITES protection. Ho wood gives a comparable linalool profile from a tree that is fast-growing and, in several countries, invasive.
