Pot marigold, named for the calends — the first day of the month — because in a mild climate it seems to be in flower on every one of them. Its petals close in dull weather and open in sun. The useful compounds are carotenoids and triterpenoids that are fat-soluble rather than water-soluble, which is why calendula is traditionally steeped in oil for weeks rather than brewed, and why our balm carries it as an infusion.

The plant the balm is named for — a slow oil infusion rather than a solvent extract, used where skin is dry and worked.
