The power of plants

The plant

Not a ginseng at all, and the plant is quick to say so: it belongs to the same family as ivy rather than to the Panax genus that gives true ginseng. It is a thorny shrub of the taiga, so densely spined along its stems that gathering the root is unpleasant work. It survives winters that kill most of what grows beside it, and the root is the part that carries it through.
