The power of plants

The plant

The commonest wild rose in Europe, and the one whose hips were collected in Britain during the Second World War to make syrup when citrus could not be imported. Its seed can be extracted with supercritical CO₂ rather than pressed — carbon dioxide held under pressure until it behaves as a solvent, then simply released as gas, leaving no residue behind and pulling out a deeper, more concentrated fraction than pressing can.
